WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Before there was Oscar Wilde and Earnest, there was Sheridan and his romping, rollicking Rivals. Brimming with wit, awash in mistaken identities, and featuring the glorious verbal contortions of Mrs. Malaprop--who gave her name to the trait--this sparkling romance defined the genre in 1775 and continues to delight today.

Even though there are no literal doors to slam in director David Schweizer's production of Richard Brindsley Sheridan's 18th-century Restoration comedy
The Rivals, now at Baltimore's Centerstage, one nevertheless feels the reverberations that generally ensue from the comic rattling of those frames and archways. Schweizer's staging pitches Sheridan's delightfully chatty play to the clouds rather than allowing it to languish on the sensible, stately ground -- with frequently effervescent results.
With the actors -- led by the indispensable Kristine Nielsen -- whirling about set designer Caleb Wertenbaker's exaggerated bright blue murals (which resemble a country house wallpaper on acid) [...]
