WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The celebrated multiphonic singers from Tibet's Drepung Loseling Monastery return to Scottsdale to share their centuries-old sacred traditions. Robed in magnificent costumes and playing traditional Tibetan instruments -- from 10-foot long dung-chen horns to gyaling trumpets -- the Loseling monks perform ancient temple music and dances that are believed to generate energies conducive to world healing.
The music of the Drepung Loseling monks was featured on the Golden Globe-nominated soundtrack of the film Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt, and they performed with Philip Glass at Lincoln Center in the live presentation of his award-winning score to the Martin Scorsese film Kundun. In addition to touring internationally, the monks have released several best-selling recordings and collaborated with artists as diverse as Paul Simon, Edie Brickell, Natalie Merchant, the Beastie Boys and the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart, to name but a few.
The Mystical Arts of Tibet tour is co-produced by Richard Gere Productions and Drepung Loseling Institute, the North American seat of Drepung Loseling Monastery, India. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the tour has three basic purposes: to make a contribution to world peace and healing; to generate a greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization; and to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India.
The monks will be in residency at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts during the week of their performance, creating a sand mandala and presenting a variety of free lectures and discussions.
