Founded in 1970 by Joan Myers Brown, the Philadelphia Dance Company, affectionately known as Philadanco, has danced its way into the hearts of America. Created out of a need to provide opportunities for Black dancers, who were then systematically denied entrance in many local dance schools, Philadanco has since grown into a professional dance company that is recognized across the nation and around the world for its artistic integrity, superbly trained dancers and electrifying performances. Philadanco easily moves from the classical music of Mahler, Bach and Ravel to the modern rhythms of Prince, Wumni Olaiya and Earth Wind and Fire. A resident dance company of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts since 2000, Philadanco has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, United Kingdom and the Caribbean and with major orchestras.

In celebration of Philadanco's 40th-anniversary season, a number of new works have been commissioned for the company, including one by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founder and artistic director of the Urban Bush Women, whose imaginative choreography is well-known to Scottsdale audiences.
