WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

A magnet for media attention, Nobuyuki Tsujii achieved a superhuman victory when he tied for the gold medal with Haochen Zhang in the most recent Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The first Japanese and the first blind pianist to win the coveted award, Tsujii is a phenomenon on the classical music scene. Already the subject of a documentary and a mega star in Japan, he inspired Time Magazine to coin the phrase "Nobu Fever."

With few piano scores available in Braille, Tsujii learns the music by ear as he listens to custom-made recordings that are broken down into the left hand and right hand parts. Tsujii's meeting of the legendary R&B singer Stevie Wonder was "the happiest moment of my life," according to Tsujii. Perhaps it was Stevie Wonders' as well.

Program:
Mozart: Sonata in C Major, K. 330
Beethoven: Sonata No. 17 in D Minor, Op. 31, No. 2, Tempest
Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
