Composed when he was just sixteen, Mendelssohn's Octet features solely strings and requires a compelling, virtuosic energy that is shared amongst the players of the ensemble. This immensely challenging piece is paired with Beethoven's Septet, one of the composer's most popular chamber works. Composed when he was just thirteen, the Septet was written at a turning point in Beethoven's compositional life. It contains hints of his Piano Sonata in G major and served as a prelude to his great symphonies.
