Miss Margarida's Way is both absurdist comedy and political allegory about a tyrannical school teacher and her class (the audience). Apareceu a Margarida was first produced in 1973 in playwright Roberto Athayde's native Brazil which, at the time, was under a brutal military dictatorship. It was promptly closed by the authorities, who seemed to find its depiction of the tyrannical school teacher and her methods a little too close to the bone - although, after some changes were made, it was allowed to reopen. Over the years Miss Margarida's Way has become an international classic, with nearly 300 productions in more than 30 countries.
