WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Gerturdue Berg was a broadcasting legend, creating the beloved character "Molly Goldberg" who was a staple of radio and television for twenty eight years. She was a pioneer in the industry, long before Lucille Ball, working as the producer, writer and star of The Goldbergs. Over three decades she wrote every script, went after sponsors, and along the way garnered herself an Emmy Award and a Tony Award. The Goldbergs were so popular in their day that they toured vaudeville, made a film, appeared in a hit Broadway play, were featured on commercials and promotional items and were number one on CBS when Milton Berle was number one on NBC.
Set during the eve of her interview on "Person to Person" with Edward R. Murrow Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Bloom explores the life of an extraordinary woman who balanced a career and family life and created a cultural icon. Beginning with Berg's childhood at Fleishmans Hotel in the catskills where she was the entertainment director at age thirteen, through her first radio broadcasts and ending just after her co-star Philip Loeb was blacklisted by McCarthy, the play is a witty and nostalgiac look into the life of a star that is now barely remembered by younger generations.
The show is written by and stars local actress Elayne Wilks. Andy Rogow directs.
