WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A rendezvous without a chaperone? Two Oxford chaps run into trouble when they try to woo their ladies without proper supervision. Hilarious misunderstandings arise when Charley's "aunt" drops by for a visit, setting off a chain of unexpected antics. In a program note for the Goodspeed Musicals production of Where's Charley?, Tony Walton -- the show's director and designer -- expresses mystification that this 1948 Broadway hit is so rarely revived. I've always wondered about that myself. But, if you really think about it, there are some facts about the musical that make the infrequency of its production at least partly understandable.
Based on Charley's Aunt, a farce by Brandon Thomas, Where's Charley? has a book by George Abbott and a score by Frank Loesser.
